Juan Manuel Castro Prieto is a visual artist who uses photography as a means to highlight a reality hidden behind the apparent logic of everyday life. There is always mystery, restlessness, adulterated beauty in his images. Wherever he is, the camera, for him, is a filter that enables him to express his inner perceptions in images; which is why every project acquires a colour temperature and a certain form, always maintaining the identifying nature of his photography.
The diversity in the body of his work is one of the most surprising features of his creation. Castro Prieto moves with elegance and ease in all photographic registers, thanks to intuition and to the mastery of a technique that he has refined with time, until he has adapted it to illustrate the invisible. Fuzziness, white lights charged with spirituality, picturesque textures, shades and ambiguous reflections… Visual strategies at the service of a content, which they are in fully harmony with, to go deeper into the field of subjectivity.
Castro Prieto has visited far-away countries (Peru, India, Ethiopia…) capturing the character of their peoples and the magical atmospheres of their landscapes, but he has also fixed his gaze on his more immediate surroundings: his village, his family, everything that surrounds him and that forms part of his daily life. Depending on the project, the author generates a kind of specific language in agreement with the needs it awakes in him: closer to poetry or to the documentary, in bright, contrasting colours or in pastel colours, in white and black, or with a golden tinge, using more risky or more classical settings… In an almost unconscious manner, but guided by the experience of many years and the knowledge of the medium, Castro Prieto endows on each and every one of his works its own photographic personality, translating the spirit and the emotions that guided him in their execution with aesthetic-conceptual formulas. Perhaps that is why his images transmit to the audience an immediate and intense impression: surprise, fullness, attraction, sadness… At times it is even possible to feel the smell that prevails in the spaces, the heat of the atmospheres or the softness of the surfaces.
In Castro Prieto’s photographs, there are no unfounded elements or coincidences; everything has a meaning, a reason for being and being there. A subtle symbolism hides behind them, linking them directly to recurrent questions in the author’s imagination: memory, life cycle and death, sex, religion. This interpretation enriches his images and enables the audience to reach a second level of meanings that goes beyond the aesthetics of beauty, to go deeper into the reflection on the obsessions, fears and uncertainties that are typical of the human being.

Juan Manuel Castro Prieto es un artista visual que utiliza la fotografía como medio para evidenciar una realidad oculta tras la aparente lógica de lo cotidiano. En sus imágenes siempre hay misterio, inquietud, belleza adulterada. Donde quiera que esté, la cámara para él es un filtro que le permite materializar en imágenes sus percepciones interiores; por eso cada proyecto adquiere una temperatura de color y una forma determinada, manteniendo en todo momento el carácter identitario de su fotografía.
La diversidad en el cuerpo de su trabajo es uno de rasgos más sorprendentes de su creación. Castro Prieto se mueve con elegancia y comodidad en todos los registros fotográficos gracias a la intuición y al dominio de una técnica que ha ido perfeccionando con el tiempo hasta adecuarla a la representación de lo invisible. Desenfoques, luces blancas cargadas de espiritualidad, texturas pictóricas, sombras y reflejos ambiguos…Estrategias visuales al servicio de un contenido, con el que armonizan plenamente, para adentrarse en el terreno de la subjetividad.
Castro Prieto ha recorrido países lejanos (Perú, India, Etiopía…) captando el carácter de sus gentes y las atmósferas mágicas de sus paisajes, pero también, ha fijado su mirada en el entorno más cercano: su pueblo, su familia, todo aquello que le rodea y forma parte de su cotidianeidad. Dependiendo del proyecto, el autor genera un tipo de lenguaje específico acorde con las necesidades que despierta en él: más cercano a la poesía o a lo documental, en colores vivos y contrastados o en tonos pastel, en blanco y negro o virados al oro, utilizando encuadres más arriesgados o clásicos… De una manera casi inconsciente pero guiada por la experiencia de los años y el conocimiento del medio, Castro Prieto dota de una personalidad fotográfica a cada uno de sus trabajos traduciendo mediante fórmulas estético-conceptuales el espíritu y las emociones que le guiaron en su realización. Quizá es por ello que sus imágenes transmiten una sensación inmediata e intensa en el espectador: extrañeza, plenitud, atracción, tristeza… A veces incluso puede sentirse el olor que predomina en los espacios, el calor de los ambientes o la suavidad de las superficies.
En las fotografias de Castro Prieto no existen los elementos gratuitos ni las casualidades, todo tiene un sentido, una razón de ser y estar ahí. Tras ellas se esconde una sutil simbología que las vincula directamente con cuestiones recurrentes en el imaginario del autor: la memoria, el ciclo de la vida y la muerte, el sexo, la religión. Esta lectura enriquece sus imágenes y permite al espectador acceder a un segundo nivel de significados que transciende la estética de lo bello para adentrarse en la reflexión sobre las obsesiones, miedos e incertidumbres propias del ser humano.
